Healthy Aging Graduate Nursing Scholarships
Graduate scholarships encourage master's and doctoral nursing students to pursue research projects in the field of aging and gerontological nursing. Funds are unrestricted and may be used at the discretion of the student to facilitate completion of the research.
Master's Scholarships
Master's Student Scholarships support work on a master's thesis or project. A limited number of scholarships, supported by our community partners, may be available for specific projects focused on designated areas of gerontological nursing.
Scholarships are awarded twice each year to accommodate the different graduate program pathways. Master's students may apply for scholarships to be awarded in Autumn or Winter quarters. The award amount is $5,000.
Students are eligible to apply for the Master's Scholarship if they:
- Are enrolled in the master's program (MS, MN, or 2nd year MEPN) at UW School of Nursing or one of the Nursing Programs at UW Bothell or UW Tacoma
- Have a thesis advisor to guide the research or project
Selection for a Master's Scholarship is based on the following criteria:
- Relevance to healthy aging/gerontology
- Suitability for project completion by the end of the academic year (Spring Quarter)
- Relevance of future work plans to healthy aging/gerontology
- Project's impact on gerontological nursing and/or older adults
- Need for financial assistance to complete the project
Master's scholarship awards are awarded annually.
Note: Master's applications are currently closed, but applications are expected to be available soon for our annual scholarship awards. Applications will be due October 20, 2008, with awards and funds disbursed the first week in November 2008.
Doctoral Scholarships
Doctoral Student Scholarships support work on a DNP investigative project or PhD dissertation. A limited number of scholarships, supported by our community partners, may be available for specific projects focused on designated areas of gerontological nursing.
The award amount is $7,500.
Students are eligible to apply for the Doctoral Scholarship if they:
- Are enrolled in the DNP or PhD program at UW School of Nursing
- Have a doctoral committee chair to guide the research
Selection for the Doctoral Scholarships is based on the following criteria:
- Demonstrated commitment to/scholarship in gerontology
- Relevance of future career/research plans to gerontological nursing
- Quality of the research proposed (including significance and feasibility)
- Progress in the DNP/PhD program
Doctoral scholarship recipients are announced at the end of each academic year to be awarded the following Autumn quarter.

Additional Information
Graduate scholarship awardees and their mentors are asked to sign a Learning Contract that identifies their mutual responsibilities.
