Alliance for Aging Research

Private, not-for-profit citizen advocacy organization for improving the health and independence of Americans as they age.  The Alliance for Aging Research offers The Silver Book: Chronic Disease and Medical Innovation in an Aging Nation,
an almanac of facts, statistics, graphs, and information from nearly 100 agencies, organizations and experts.  The Silver Book is a searchable database that is constantly updated and expanded in order to highlight the latest research and data on the burden of chronic disease and the value of investing in medical research.


American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry
National association representing and serving its members and the field of geriatric psychiatry.

AARP (formerly, American Association of Retired Persons)
AARP is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to addressing the needs and interests of persons 50 and older. Through information and education, advocacy and service, we seek to enhance the quality of life for all by promoting independence, dignity and purpose.

American Geriatrics Society
The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is the premier professional organization of health care providers dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all older adults. With an active membership of over 6,000 health care professionals, the AGS has a long history of effecting change in the provision of health care for older adults. In the last decade, the Society has become a pivotal force in shaping attitudes, policies and practices regarding health care for older people.

American Society of Aging
American Society on Aging is an association of diverse individuals bound by a common goal: to support the commitment and enhance the knowledge and skills of those who seek to improve the quality of life of older adults and their families. The membership of ASA is a multidisciplinary array of professionals who are concerned with the physical, emotional, social, economic and spiritual aspects of aging. They range from practitioners, educators, administrators, policymakers, business people, researchers, students, and more.

The Assisted Living Workgroup Report
The Assisted Living Workgroup (ALW) included nearly 50 national organizations that came together at the request of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging to develop consensus recommendations to assure quality in assisted living. The ALW presented 110 recommendations to the Senate's Aging Committee in April 2003.  The Center for Excellence in Assisted Living has provided PDF copies of the report, organized by topic document.

Gerontological Society of America
The Gerontological Society of America is a non-profit professional organization with more than 5000 members in the field of aging. GSA provides researchers, educators, practitioners, and policy makers with opportunities to understand, advance, integrate, and use basic and applied research on aging to improve the quality of life as one ages.

Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association

The nation's largest and oldest professional nursing organization dedicated to promoting excellence in pain management and end-of-life care.

The John A. Hartford Foundation
The John A. Hartford Foundation is a committed champion of health care training, research and service system innovations to ensure the well-being and vitality of older adults.  Hartford programs provide opportunities to increase the nation's capacity to create nurses who are well prepared to provide high quality care for older adults.  The Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative (HGNI) includes an array of programs to prepare professional nurses to play leadership roles in improving the health of older adults.  The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing identifies and develops best practices in nursing care of older adults and encourages national leadership to establish these practices as the standard for geriatric nursing care.  The Institute offers a free, online Geriatric Nursing Certification Review Course.  Hartford's Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) initiative, through the American Academy of Nursing, has been addressing the critical shortage of leaders in geriatric nursing education and research by supporting Scholars & Fellows and the Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNEs). The Hartford Geriatric Nursing Education Project, administered by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, incorporates complementary programs and resources to improve nursing care for older adults through curriculum enhancement, faculty development and scholarship opportunities.

Live Well, Live Long – Health promotion & disease prevention for older adults
The American Society on Aging and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are offer multiple health promotion modules, including strategies and materials, for professionals who work with the elderly.

The Merck Manuals

As part of its commitment to ensuring that all who need and want medical information can get it, Merck provides the content of The Merck Manual of Health & Aging (published in 2004) and The Merck Manual of Geriatrics (3rd Edition) on the web for free. Registration is not required, and use is unlimited.


National Academy on an Aging Society
As a non-partisan public policy institute, the Academy actively conducts research on issues related to population aging and provides information to the public, the press, policymakers, and the academic community.

National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging
NACDA acquires and preserves data relevant to gerontological research, processing as needed to promote effective research use, disseminates them to researchers, and facilitates their use. By preserving and making available the largest library of electronic data on aging in the United States, NACDA offers opportunities for secondary analysis on major issues of scientific and policy relevance.

National Center for Health Statistics
As the Nation’s principal health statistics agency, the NCHS compiles statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of people in the United States. The NCHS is a unique public resource for health information–-a critical element of public health and health policy.  "Fast Stats" on older persons' health are available.

National Council on the Aging
Founded in 1950, NCOA is the nation's first association of organizations and professionals dedicated to promoting the dignity, self-determination, well being, and contributions of older persons.

National Gerontological Nursing Association
The National Gerontological Nursing Association (NGNA) promotes gerontological nursing in order to influence the clinical care of older adults.

National Institute on Aging
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), one of the 27 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health, leads a broad scientific effort to understand the nature of aging and to extend the healthy, active years of life. In 1974, Congress granted authority to form the National Institute on Aging to provide leadership in aging research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs relevant to aging and older people. Subsequent amendments to this legislation designated the NIA as the primary federal agency on Alzheimer’s disease research.

National PACE Association
The National PACE Association (NPA) exists to advance the efforts of Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). PACE programs coordinate and provide all needed preventive, primary, acute and long term care services so that older individuals can continue living in the community.

National Resource Center on Nutrition, Physical Activity & Aging
The Center promotes active healthy aging by working to reduce nutrition risk among older adults, especially minorities with health disparities. The goals are to support quality of life, improve functionality, promote independence, and decrease early nursing home admissions and hospitalizations, through better nutrition.

National Sleep Foundation
The National Sleep Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Americans who suffer from sleep problems and disorders. This site offers web pages specific to older adults and sleep.

NIH Senior Health

NIH Senior Health makes aging-related health information easily accessible for family members and friends seeking reliable, easy to understand online health information. This site was developed by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM), both part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).


Practicing Physician Education in Geriatrics
With the support of the Merck Institute of Aging & Health, this site is dedicated to educating healthcare professionals and the public about the management of common geriatric health problems using a collaborative provider-patient approach.  The site offers toolkits for common geriatric syndromes.

University of Washington Sites

Alzheimer's Disease Research Center
Focuses on research that can reveal the basic mechanisms underlying the development of adult dementias, with particular attention to genetic factors underlying Alzheimer's Disease (AD).

Center for Interdisciplinary Geriatric Research

Funded by a RAND/Hartford initiative, the UW CIGR promotes Interdisciplinary Collaboration of Researchers in the development, testing, and dissemination of health-enhancing interventions for older adults.

Health Promotion Research Center
The HPRC conducts community-based research projects aimed at promoting the health and well-being of Washington State residents, with a focus on older adults.  Its mission is to improve health by conducting high-quality prevention research that has an emphasis on healthy aging and can be incorporated into community practice.

Institute on Aging
This is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to research and teaching on aging.  The Institute on Aging developed the popular Certificate Program in Gerontology, which can now be completed entirely via distance learning.

Northwest Geriatric Education Center
The NWGEC is dedicated to improving health outcomes and quality of life for older adults.  It is one of a national network of 45 GECs that have been funded in the past by the Bureau of Health Professions of the Health Resources and Services Administration. Established in 1985, NWGEC's programs address health concerns specific to older adults in the Pacific Northwest-- Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho -- and conducts health promotion training programs and develops education resources for health care and social service professionals working with older adults.

Aging and Disability Services

The ADSA of the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services provides information about long-term care and supportive services and supports for individuals with developmental delays or disabilities, cognitive impairment, chronic illness and related functional disabilities.  Includes informational pages for professionals and the State Plan on Aging.

The Healthy Aging Partnership
This site offers seniors, their family members and caregivers in King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties information and assistance for making choices about medical care, physical activity, volunteer opportunities, transportation and other issues for older adults.

Office of Health Promotion

The Healthy Aging pages of the Washington State Department of Health provide information on some of the most important things older adults can do to stay healthy, active and independent through the years.

Senior Services

The largest non-profit agency serving older people in Washington State. This agency seeks to promote the emotional, social, and physical well being of older adults through an integrated system of quality programs and services.

Washington Association of Area Agencies on Aging

The W4A works with local Area Agencies on Aging (AAA), which provide services to elders and adults with disabilities, to create communities that support people as they age. The organization seeks to enhance the effectiveness of each AAA through a strong agenda of information, debate, advocacy and education.
